“Sonny, Regina, and Leo got the job done for us at the legislature today,” said Tyler Carlson, CEO of MEC referring to Arizona Senator Sonny Borrelli, and Representatives Regina Cobb and Leo Biasiucci, on their efforts to bring SB1460 to a vote.

The legislation passed the Arizona Senate earlier but was stalled when the House of Representatives cut back on their activities due to the COVID-19 situation.

“There was one shot to bring it to a vote before they adjourned. Senator Borrelli and Representative Cobb showed great leadership in making sure the bill was passed. They recognize the lack of high-speed broadband in rural communities and took the right action to support our members. The COVID-19 situation has brought increased attention to this critical need,” said Carlson. SB1460 will now go to Governor Ducey for his signature. The legislation will ensure MEC and other Arizona electric cooperatives have the legal foundation to operate a broadband program.
