From Apprentice to Journeyman: Dedication Pays Off

In the Spring 2026 issue of MEC Currents, we shared a look inside Mohave Electric Cooperative’s apprenticeship program—highlighting the dedication, discipline, and teamwork required to build a career in the electric utility industry.

Since that story was published, three of MEC’s apprentice linemen—Grant Kawell, Jahve Suarez, and Michael Bedard—have reached a significant milestone in their careers, successfully completing the program and promoting to Journeyman Lineman status.

The achievement marks the culmination of nearly four years of rigorous training that includes approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job experience, along with extensive coursework completed on personal time.
Apprentices learn everything from electrical theory and system design to hands-on skills required to safely maintain and build overhead and underground power systems.

Earning the journeyman title is no small feat. Along the way, apprentices work through long days in the field, respond to outages at all hours, and continue studying after the workday ends. The program demands persistence, accountability, and a strong commitment to safety—qualities that are essential in the electric utility industry.

Grant Kawell began his journey with Mohave Electric on January 24, 2022, as a Groundman before entering the apprenticeship program later that year. His successful completion of the program is a testament to his perseverance and the effort he has put into mastering his craft.

As he steps into his new role, Kawell is already focused on the responsibilities ahead. “When you become a journeyman, it’s a lot different than being an apprentice—you’re responsible for the crew and making sure everyone stays safe,” said Grant.

Jahve Suarez’s path reflects years of dedication and growth within the cooperative. Since joining Mohave Electric in September 2013 as a meter reader, he has worked his way through multiple roles—moving into a Groundman position with the line crew in December 2017, advancing into the apprenticeship program in December 2021, and now earning his place as a Journeyman Lineman. His accomplishments reflect his dedication to continuous learning and professional development.

Suarez says this process tested him in every way. “There were definitely times when I thought, ‘Man, what did I get myself into,’ because it was a lot harder than I originally thought. The biggest hurdle for me was juggling life—work, studying, being on call, and family all at the same time,” said Jahve. “But once I finished, it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders—no more book work, no more tests—just completing the hours and finally becoming a Journeyman Lineman.”

Michael Bedard began his career with Mohave Electric Cooperative on February 7, 2022, starting as a Groundman before advancing into the apprenticeship program. He is our most recent graduate to Journeyman Lineman. Michael will continue serving members and bring the same professionalism and perseverance that carried him through the program.

Bedard describes the program as long and demanding. “It kind of felt like an eternity at times, but looking back, that’s when I really fell in love with the electrical trade,” said Michael. “It’s a surreal feeling to finally have made it to this point, and I’m beyond excited to continue learning and furthering my education in this career.”

Now, after years of hard work and determination, these men have officially joined the ranks of MEC’s Journeyman Linemen, marking a significant milestone in their careers. Their journey reflects a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and the resilience required to succeed—setting a strong example for those who follow. It also signals the beginning of the next chapter in their careers with MEC and underscores the dedication needed to excel in this demanding field.

While the title may have changed, their role within the cooperative continues to carry the same responsibility—to safely deliver reliable power to the communities MEC serves. Their accomplishment reflects not only personal determination, but also the strength of MEC’s apprenticeship program and the culture of teamwork that supports employees every step of the way—from the ground up.
