On April 1, 2026, Evan Mynk and Abraham Vissers, two students chosen for Washington Youth Tour, represented MEC at the inaugural Pathways to Power – Youth Tour Statewide Legislative Summit hosted by Grand Canyon State Electric Cooperative Association. This new spring program provided a unique opportunity for Arizona’s high school juniors to explore the inner workings of state government, meet elected officials, and connect with peers from across the state’s electric cooperatives.
Accompanying Evan and Abraham was Mohave Electric Cooperative’s Call Center Supervisor, Nancy Turner, who served as chaperone and delegate, ensuring the students had a rewarding and educational experience throughout the day.
The summit began with an interactive orientation, designed to immerse students in the legislative process and encourage active participation in civic engagement. Participants toured the Arizona State Capitol, gaining firsthand insight into how state laws are crafted and debated. They had the rare chance to meet legislators, ask thoughtful questions, and understand the importance of advocacy in shaping policies that affect their communities.
In addition to the formal sessions, the summit emphasized collaboration and leadership development. Evan and Abraham engaged in group discussions, networked with students from other Arizona electric cooperatives, and practiced articulating their ideas on issues affecting Arizona. This dynamic environment encouraged them to step confidently into their roles as future leaders and informed citizens.
MEC selects Washington Youth Tour participants through a competitive process that includes an essay and a presentation before a panel of volunteer judges. This ensures that students chosen not only excel academically but also demonstrate strong communication skills and a commitment to community involvement. This year, Abraham and Evan attended the Pathways to Power summit and will join the other five student delegates in the upcoming Washington Youth Tour this June.

Reflecting on the experience, Nancy Turner remarked, “Seeing Abraham and Evan engage directly with state leaders and confidently discuss issues that matter to them was inspiring. Programs like this show the impact cooperative education can have on developing the next generation of civic-minded leaders.”
The Pathways to Power – Youth Tour Statewide Legislative Summit complements MEC’s longstanding commitment to education, training, and information. It provides a springboard for students before they embark on the Washington Youth Tour, where they will further expand their knowledge of government, history, and civic responsibility in the nation’s capital.
MEC congratulates Abraham Vissers and Evan Mynk for representing MEC with distinction and encourages all eligible high school juniors to consider applying for next year’s program. Details about the Washington Youth Tour and Pathways to Power programs can be found at www.mohaveelectric.com, with applications opening in October 2026.
