Mohave Electric Cooperative Reminds Members of New Election Process for MEC Board of Directors

Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC), a not-for-profit electric cooperative, is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors elected by and from its membership. Three directors, one from each of MEC’s three districts, are elected each year to serve staggered three-year terms. As MEC prepares for the 2026 election cycle, MEC is providing members with a summary of its director nomination and election process approved by MEC members at the 2025 Annual Membership Meeting.

In accordance with MEC Bylaws, MEC holds district meetings in each of MEC’s three districts for elections each year prior to the Annual Membership Meeting. Members in attendance at each district meeting vote and elect an eligible candidate to serve on MEC’s Board of Directors. The meetings also provide a forum for members to discuss MEC business and share feedback with the MEC Board of Directors and management.

One of the most significant updates to MEC’s director election process —adopted by members last year—relates to how director candidates are nominated. Previously, candidates could be nominated from the floor during each district meeting. Beginning this year, nominations from the district meeting floor are no longer permitted.

In order to be eligible to run for election for a director position, a candidate must be a member in good standing who resides in the district and meets all director qualifications. Under the new election rules, new candidates are required to submit the following two items to MEC prior to July 19, 2026 (at least 60 days prior to the Annual Membership Meeting):

• A nominating petition signed by at least 20 members from the candidate’s district
• A completed application for director

MEC’s members approved these changes with the intent to create a more structured and transparent nomination and election process. The nominating petition will ensure new candidates have demonstrated support from fellow members in their District. The director application will allow MEC to verify candidates’ eligibility to serve on the Board of Directors. The prior to 60-day timing restraint allows adequate time for MEC to prepare accurate election materials including all candidate names and bio information in the election mailer; previously, information on candidates nominated from the floor would not be included in the mailer.  Members should also note that each member may sign only one candidate’s nominating petition, and late nominating petition and / or director application submissions will disqualify a member from running for an MEC director position.

MEC is officially opening the call for director candidates from May 1, 2026, through July 19, 2026. Members interested in running for a director position are encouraged to begin the nomination process early to ensure all requirements are completed on time.
