John Nelssen, District 1 Director since 1996, is a 21-year resident of Wikieup, Arizona. From 1998 - 2018 he served as Vice President.
Nelssen has attained a Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate through course work offered by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, a recognized measurement of competency on key current issues. He regularly updates skills through course training and workshops in the electrical utility field and has taken advanced course studies to attain the Board Leadership Certificate, a recognized measurement of competency on key current issues.
Former owner of Left Field Meat Company in Wikieup, Nelssen was an electrical test engineer with utilities in Arizona and California and an owner/engineer of an electrical high voltage testing company.
Nelssen also served on the Southwest Transmission Cooperative (SWTC) Board of Directors and previously served as chairman.
In April 2011, Nelssen received the Touchstone Energy Power and Hope Recognition Award, a program that recognizes cooperative directors and employees who have gone above and beyond to help co-op members in need.
Nelssen served four years in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate and is a Vietnam Veteran. He is a member of Masonic Lodge No. 29 in Phoenix and has been active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America youth programs.
