Be Ready For Monsoon Season!

Summer brings monsoons, and electrical safety during storms will help keep you and your family safe.  Extreme heat is typical at its onset, followed by an influx of moisture that leads to a series of thunderstorms.  When accompanied by lightning and high winds, thunderstorms can present an array of hazards. Knowing this, advance planning can help minimize the risks and safety concerns associated with storms. Here are some tips to protect yourself and your belongings during thunderstorms:
  • Unplug electronics.
  • Avoid using electrical items and telephones which can carry power surges.
  • Stay away from plumbing fixtures as lightning can travel along metal pipes.
  • Keep a battery-powered TV or radio on hand for weather updates.
  • Delay outdoor activities - it doesn’t have to be raining for lightning to strike during a thunderstorm.
  • Close windows, window blinds and shades, or curtains.
  • Secure outside doors and items that may be potential hazards in the wind.

WCS Community Grants Help Fund Numerous Community Projects
In March of this year, Mohave Electric Cooperative formed a committee of community leaders to disburse unclaimed funds from the Western Competitive Solutions (WCS) distribution, which totaled approximately $188,000. MEC’s intent was to award and distribute funding to various community and non-profit organizations.

“Grant proposals from those groups who demonstrated sustainable projects were given favorable consideration by the committee,” Mohave Electric Cooperative CEO Tyler Carlson said. “Those organizations also demonstrated they could create a direct benefit to a significant number of members served by MEC. Those were the two stipulations that were a high priority for the committee.”
